There is an aio bug for 10g. Safer to go with:
cd $ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/lib make PL_ORALIBS=-laio -f ins_rdbms.mk async_on make PL_ORALIBS=-laio -f ins_rdbms.mk ioracle

$ORACLE_BASE/admin/<your_SID>/pfile
it is usually used only for database creation. The default pfile should be in $ORACLE_HOME/dbs.
However from 9i (so it is true even for 10g) the database use an spfile. So you need to issue:
alter system set filesystemio_options=asynch scope=spfile;
and then restart the instance.

Much better to have LD_ASSUME_KERNEL unset for 10g components.
